GROTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Middlesex District Attorney's office said a teenager drowned in a river in Groton on Wednesday afternoon.
The drowning happened at around 3:20 PM Wednesday. The D.A.'s office said the 17-year-old boy was jumping in and out of the Squannacook River on a rope swing with a group of five friends in the Bertozzi Wildlife Management Area. The group then tried to cross the river, and the boy went under and didn't come back up.
The Groton Fire Department found the boy around an hour later at 4:30 PM, and he was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials on the ground said the water level in the river was high during the search, and the current was "visibly strong" because of recent heavy rain.
