DORCHESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Shoppers at the Target store at the South Bay Shopping Center in Dorchester will have to make person-to-person transactions if they want to check out.

The store has shut down all of its self-checkout kiosks, putting signs over the machines that tell customers they need to stand in a normal cashier line.

Staff members told WBZ NewsRadio Monday the decision was made because of high rates of theft.

Management, however, said it was about prioritizing face-to-face interactions with customers.

It is not clear if the shutdown will be permanent.
