MILTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The State Department of Fire Safety and the State Police are investigating several brushfires at Blue Hills Reservation as suspicious.
DFS Spokesperson Jake Wark told WBZ NewsRadio that he didn't want to get too into detail. He said that, generally, accidental fires have a clear ignition source like a campfire — and suspicious fires often do not.
He said "several" recent fires in the Reservation look suspicious.
"An outdoor fire is not a victimless fire," Wark said. He explained that the brush fires divert resources from local communities that might need firefighters. They often spend days trying to put the brush fires out. He said 98% of brush fires are started by humans, one way or another.
In mid-May, the DFS and the offered a $5,000 reward for information on eight fires they think were intentionally set at Lynn Woods Reservation in Lynn.
The fires there burned 400 acres of land.
