MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Thanksgiving Eve is known as a popular day to get the party started early, but for law enforcement, it is known as the start of some pretty dangerous behavior.
The combination of more people traveling for Thanksgiving and those driving impaired has changed countless lives. State Police Captain Kathryn Downey said 33 people died and another 284 were injured on roadways last November.
“Drinking and driving is a risk no one should take. The consequences of drunk driving and driving under the influence of drugs can be life-altering,” said Downey.
State and local police are starting their impaired driving enforcement effort, increasing the number of patrols deployed across the Commonwealth on Wednesday.
“Surviving your Thanksgiving drive can be as simple as just making good decisions. Always drive 100 percent sober, or designate a sober driver to get you where you need to go. If it’s your turn to be the designated driver, take your job seriously and don’t drink or use drugs,” said Downey.
Downey also said even one alcoholic drink can be too many.
