BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Under-appreciated. Over-worked. That could describe many jobs, including public transit drivers.

They have the big responsibility of getting riders to their destinations safely and efficiently while under a fair amount of pressure and scrutiny.

March is Transit Driver Appreciation Month recognizing the 2,500 drivers and operators who help power the MBTA.

And March 18 is Transit Driver Appreciation Day, a day every year that was selected to celebrate public transit vehicle operators around the world and recognize the essential services they provide. "Those people have a tough job," said one rider. "Dealing with lots of angry people, but generally they do a great job."

Another showed her love with a personal message. "Shout out to MBTA drivers," she said. "I know you get a lot of grim passengers, but you are doing your best and we appreciate you helping us get to work."
