BEAN'S GRANT, N.H. (AP) — A rescue team carried heavy medical equipment for miles to get to an ill hiker in the New Hampshire wilderness.

Fish and Game says a U.S. Forest Service backcountry steward was hiking on the Webster Cliff trail Sunday evening when he came across a 61-year-old West Virginia man suffering a medical emergency and only able to walk about 10 steps at a time due to shortness of breath.

The steward ran to find cell service and call 911, prompting a response from Fish and Game conservation officers and Twin Mountain Fire and Rescue.

The team reached the hiker around 11:20 p.m., treated him and escorted him to the trailhead, arriving safely at 6:30 Monday morning.
