BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — According to Coleman Nee with the Disabled American Veterans, it was no accident that their protest against the MBTA's proposed cuts took place on Veterans' Day.
Nee pointed out at the demonstration Wednesday that Heath Street Station on the T's Green Line, which is next to the VA Hospital, is currently on the chopping block.
"[This decision] by the MBTA is not only inconsiderate and cruel, but it is harmful to our veterans in the city of Boston," he said.
The protest followed the MBTA's announcement this week of several proposed service cuts in response to pandemic-level ridership rates.
The T's proposals include cutting some bus routes, cutting all ferry service, ending all commuter rail service on weekends after 9 p.m., and reducing the frequency of all subway trains by 20 percent. It would also end service on the Green Line's E-Branch past Brigham Circle.
Boston City Councillor Kenzie Bok said if the Commonwealth doesn't fully fund the MBTA, it may not resurrect at all.
"What the T is proposing today is nothing less than a death spiral," she said. "It will create a situation in which there isn't service. People can't rely on it."
