SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — No matter the season, in the middle of an urban landscape, a garden grows.

Somerville's Union Square has all the hustle and bustle one would expect in the city, but just off Vinal Avenue is the quiet of the Somerville Community Growing Center.

Amid all of its gardens and plants, one of the activities offered at the center is foraging classes teaching people all about local outdoor edible plants.

Sage McTaggart is one of the instructors who leads a foraging class.

They said being outdoors during winter is a great time to forage for edible plants. "We often think of wintertime as a time when plants are asleep, or dead," they said. "I like to show people all of the plants that are still around, the plants that remain, and what we can find living and growing around us in winter."

One of the examples they showed are Garlic Chives that grow all year in Union Square.

The Somerville Community Growing Center is now in its 30th year, and offers plenty of educational events throughout the year.
