BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Massachusetts man is facing several charges after he crashed his motorcycle and allegedly led police on a brief foot chase on Friday evening.
At around 7:30 p.m., Bridgewater police spotted two sport-style motorcycles "operating recklessly on Pleasant Street at estimated speeds of 80 miles per hour." Both motorcycles failed to stop for officers.
The driver of one motorcycle reportedly attempted to perform a "wheelie," but lost control and crashed near 535 Pleasant Street after striking a mailbox. He was later identified as 24-year-old Lucas Guimaraes of Pembroke.
After crashing, Guimaraes allegedly fled on foot and was seen ditching a backpack in the woods. Upon further investigation, officers found multiple individually packaged plastic bags inside the backpack. The plastic bags contained a white powdery substance which tested positive for cocaine, and a sum of money.
Officers eventually caught up with Guimaraes and began rendering aid for "serious visible injuries" believed to have been sustained in the crash. He was transported to Brockton's Good Samaritan Medical Center for further treatment.
Guimaraes has been charged with reckless operation of motor vehicle, speeding, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, and possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance. He has been issued a summons to appear in Brockton District Court at a later date.
Police are still working to identify the second motorcycle driver, who continued to flee from the scene of the crash.
