PEABODY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Peabody is trying to put an end to car carriers parking and offloading vehicles directly on Route 1 and Route 114.

"Car carriers are parking in the middle of the lane, in the middle of Route 114, and offloading their vehicles," Peabody City Councilor David Gamache told WBZ NewsRadio. "And not only is it a safety issue for cars going both ways, but the cars that are going to try to cross over. It’s to the point now where it’s an absolute safety nightmare. Because somebody is going to get killed. It’s a death trap."

State Rep. Thomas Walsh has created an ordinance that would ban car carriers from parking their rigs in middle crossover lanes or breakdown lanes to offload new vehicles. Violators would be fined $1,000.

"Most of our ordinances are $300 fined," Gamache said. "I got the council to agree with me that a $1000 fine would hit them and wake them up."

On Thursday, the Peabody City Council unanimously approved the car carrier ordinance, which Gamache hopes will be one day be enacted on every highway in the state.

"I would hope this legislation that we’re adopting gets mimicked at the state level with a $1000 fine," Gamache said.
