Pawtucket Man Fatally Struck On Route 195

SWANSEA, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — UPDATE 12:35 p.m.: State Police have identified the deceased victim from this crash as 47-year-old Ulise M. Pena of Pawtucket, R.I.

A Rhode Island man has died after police say he ran across Route 195 and was struck by a vehicle on Saturday.

According to Massachusetts State Police, shortly before 5:30 p.m., Troopers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck on Route 195 eastbound at Exit 8 in Swansea.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the Pawtucket man, who was a passenger in a Dodge Ram, became involved in an altercation with the driver, a 51-year-old Providence man, while the pickup was traveling westbound on Route 195.

The driver then pulled into the westbound breakdown lane, and the passenger exited the pickup. Police said the passenger then ran across all three westbound lanes and onto the eastbound side, where he was struck by a pickup truck driven by a 21-year-old Lincoln, R.I., man.

When they arrived, Troopers found the victim on the roadway and performed CPR and other emergency first aid, but he was determined to be dead at the scene.

Both drivers remained at the scene following the crash, and police said there were no other injuries. The rescue response and investigation meant the left lane of Route 195 was closed for approximately three hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
