BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It didn't come easy, but the Northeastern Huskies remained kings of the hill when it comes to college hockey in Boston, taking down the Boston University Terriers 5-4 in double overtime Monday night at the TD Garden.
The Huskies had to battle back early, as BU took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Northeastern woke up in the second, pulling away to 3-2 into the final period of regulation.
Monday night's championship game crowd was the largest in Beanpot history, and they witnessed a thrilling finale.
Late in the third period, with a 4-3 lead it appeared Northeastern was about to complete the three-peat, but Boston University forward Trevor Zegras had other ideas when he tied the game at four with less than two seconds left in regulation.
One overtime period wasn't enough to determine a winner between the two squads. With a little more than five minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Northeastern went on a powerplay as Jordan Harris won the game for the Huskies.
This is the first time in program history Northeastern has won three-straight Beanpot titles. The win gives them seven overall, fourth place among the four schools in the yearly tournament.
