DANVERS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A community college on the North Shore is using its pandemic relief money to help pay off the tuition debts of its students.

North Shore Community College in Danvers received federal pandemic relief funding like many other colleges. North Shore said it had put aside $1.2 million of that money to help its students pay off their debt to the college.

Stephen Creamer, the college's Vice President of Student Affairs, said the school has paid off debts from 503 students so far, at an average of $1,200 per student.

"We've forgiven those balances with the hope that the students will use it as a springboard to either further their education, or move on into the work world," he said.

The Community College was created by the state in 1965 and had around 10,000 students enrolled as of 2020.

Correction: A previous version of this web article said the average debt paid off was $12,000. It is actually $1,200.
