SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new software on the scene is renaming chunks of land throughout New England, and the world, making for a unique opportunity for a good old-fashioned game of hide-and-go-seek in Somerville.
The app, What3Words, assigns three random words to every ten-by-ten-foot square on its international grid.
WBZ's Matt Shearer sat in the parking lot of a Market Basket in Somerville, and tasked his co-worker Kyle Bray to find him only using the three words that What3Words generated. Those words were "Bank.Loser.Sector." and it was all Kyle had to go on to find Matt in the labyrinth that is Somerville.
While Kyle searched, Matt kept himself preoccupied by playing Mario Kart while grocery shoppers strolled by outside his parked car. After 45 minutes of triangulating their meeting location, Kyle found Matt.
"I would have thought it would have been something like 'Boston Road' since we're at a Market Basket," Kyle said.
There's not supposed to be a meaning behind why certain words are in certain places, but from time to time, there are happy coincidences and connections to be made. For example, inside the Market Basket off Somerville Avenue, the mouthwash aisle was given the words "Pushed.Spit.Prompting."
Over by a person feeding squirrels in the Boston Common, the words assigned were "Gather.Sorry.Rats." Ironically, the woman feeding the rodents kept calling them "tree rats."
"That's what we call them in the United Kingdom," she said.

As for the reason why the Market Basket parking lot was "Bank.Loser.Sector," one woman told Matt she has an idea.
"Is it because you're parked here?" she asked.
