MELROSE, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Melrose Police Department said a young woman was injured after a home invasion on Wednesday morning.

Police got a call for the break-in at a house on Lynde street just before 3:00 AM. They say a man broke into the house and demanded valuables, including car keys, from the 19-year-old. When she refused, the man stabbed her in the neck.

The woman's father, William Westgate, told WBZ-TV that the suspect had taken the knife from their kitchen, and that he luckily chose the dullest one in the drawer. He also told the station the man stole his daughter's purse before running off.

Video surveillance photo of the suspect shows a man in a hoodie, a blue surgical mask and a dark overcoat standing at the door.

The young woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. No word yet on her condition. Melrose Police are still looking for a suspect, which authorities believe could have been involved in a string of similar crimes.
