BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MBTA has announced their plan to remove all slow zones on the subway system by the end of 2024.
The T is planning a series of multi-day closures for repairs on portions of the Red, Orange, Green, and Blue Lines over the next 13 months.
MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng unveiled the plan at the MBTA Board's Safety Subcommittee meeting Thursday morning. Eng said the T hopes to remove 39 of the 191 slow zones before the end of this year, with the remaining 152 phased out next year.
The planned shutdowns will start on the Green Line between North Station and Kenmore Station from Nov. 27 to Dec. 5 and between Riverside and Kenmore stations from Dec. 11 to Dec. 20.
"We’re maximizing these outages to minimize the impact moving forward for the public," Eng said. "We know how diversions can impact people’s lives. But we also know if we give enough advanced notice, people can find ways around them."
MBTA officials first implemented the slow zones last winter over potential safety concerns on all major lines.
"Today's announcement demonstrates a new and strategic MBTA commitment to important repairs necessary to eliminate slow zones that will bolster service for the region," Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce President and CEO James E. Rooney said in a statement. "The detail, clear goals, and deadlines in the plan mark an encouraging -- and much needed -- shift towards greater transparency and accountability by the T."
