BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is asking residents to remain cautious while celebrating the Fourth of July this weekend amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"This is traditionally a weekend for gathering in large groups for historic ceremonies and social events. This is not something we can do this year here in Boston, or in Massachusetts," Walsh said.
Walsh said he has been watching other states, that have resumed large gatherings, experience a rise in coronavirus cases.
He wants to avoid a spike in the city and in the Commonwealth, especially after all the progress made in fighthe virus.
"We have collectively done an incredible job here, in my opinion. And we must continue to be diligent, and we must enjoy new opportunities to restore our economy," Walsh said. "I'm urging every single resident and business owner to take COVID-19 as seriously as you ever have."
Boston's Fourth of July celebrations will be online this year.
The Boston Pops will be holding a "Salute to Our Heroes" broadcast the evening of July 4 that will feature new content as well as highlights from previous Fourth of July celebrations.
