Mayor Walsh Announces Pause In Boston Public School's Reopening Plan

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mayor Marty Walsh announced in a press conference on Wednesday that he is temporarily pausing the Boston Public Schools reopening plan.

The district first began phasing in around 1300 students with the highest needs for in-person learning last Thursday. Mayor Walsh said in-person learning will still be in place for those students.

"We cannot take this from them right now, or so soon after they started last week," Walsh said. "Not now, when there's an opportunity, backed by public health, to have them in schools."

Phase three of the plan is being delayed by a week, meaning kindergarten students will return to school on Oct. 22 instead of Oct. 15 as officials originally intended.

The move comes as Boston's Covid-19 positivity rate rises to 4.1 percent.

"We will reevaluate where we are based on the data that we see between now and then," Walsh said. "And there are many other dates that we'll be looking at to see where our positivity rates, positive rate is throughout the city of Boston."

As of now phases four through six for other grades remain intact, but are subject to reevaluation.
