BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The streets of the Seaport were filled with robots on Saturday morning for the 6th Annual MassRobotics Robot Block Party.
RoboBoston, one of the world’s largest celebrations of robotics, showcased cutting-edge robotics and technology from more than 50 companies, universities and student robotics teams.
Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll was in attendance for MassRobotics’ first-ever Sidewalk Robot Parade, which featured dancing robots, walking robotic dogs and more.
Chief of Operations for MassRobotics Joyce Sidopoulos said that robots are task-oriented and are here to help people. She also said that the robots create an industry around them, while replacing jobs that are dirty, dull and dangerous.
“Think of a nurse in a hospital who is trying to care for her patient,” said Sidopoulos. “She doesn’t have to run down the hall to get a towel or medication. She can spend time with the patient, like what humans are best at.”
Ominous Industries Bijon Bowen came to showcase his social companion robot, Sarah. Bowen believes robots can help those who are isolated from friends and family.
“Imagine an elderly person who’s alone all the time and they live in their house, their family is very far away,” said Bowen. “Imagine having this to speak to and you can put any face on it and give it any personality.”
