BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The world's top athletes are finding ways to keep their spirits up and their eyes on the prize after the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo were officially postponed due to COVID-19.
That includes UMass Lowell graduate and track and field athlete Noelle Lambert.
"I was really excited for what the summer was going to have in store for me," she told WBZ NewsRadio.
Lambert was set to compete in the 100 meter track and field event at the Paralympic Games on July 24, but along with thousands of other elite athletes, she will now have to wait up to a year to reach that goal.
According to a joint statement from the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, the summer Games will be "rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021."
Lambert, a former UMass Lowell lacrosse player who lost her left leg in a moped accident on Martha's Vineyard in 2016, is fresh off a strong performance last Fall in Dubai. In November 2019, she came in 4th and broke a U.S. record at the World Championships. Now she now has to put her Olympic goals on hold.
While she continues to train, Lambert said she will also be focusing on her foundation Born To Run, which she founded in 2018 to raise money for artificial limbs for her fellow athletes.
