Lobster Chocolate Bar? P-Town Chocolatier Calls It 'Delicious Surprise'

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Provincetown chocolatier has a new creation with an unusual ingredient—lobster.

Paul John Kearins of Chocolatasm told WBZ NewsRadio that the Cape Cod bar, which he introduced in May, has been a hit.

"The reaction is always one of surprise," he said. "They take a bite, and are very surprised that they actually kind of like it!"

The bar contains 50 percent cocoa butter white chocolate, Cape Cod sea salt, lemon oil, parsley, and "real Atlantic lobster essence."

So how did Kearins come up with the idea?

"It was purely by accident—I have to share the credit with the owner-operator of Chequessett Chocolate in Truro," he said. "It was a conversation we had after the New England Chocolate Festival last year about the possibilities of incorporating lobster in chocolate."

After a few weeks of back and forth and some experimenting, Kearins discovered a method that worked.

"It's a very low-sugar, very high cocoa butter white chocolate with dried lobster added to it," he said. "In a kind of nostalgic way, I wanted to recreate the flavors of a lobster dinner."

Kearins sold out, but has ramped up production—so as of Thursday, the bars are available again.

The Cape Cod bar sells for $9 on the Chocolatasm online store, and can also be found here in Boston at Beacon Hill Chocolates and Gourmet Boutique in the Westin Copley Place.
