NEEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — After federal health regulators gave Pfizer's COVID-19 shot the green light for kids as young as 5 last week, local clinics geared toward young children are filling up fast.

Parents are pouncing on appointments at places that cater to the 5-to-11 age group and put in extra effort to make getting the vaccine a fun experience. The child-size dose of the vaccine is a third of the strength of the adult-sized version.

A clinic Saturday at Needham's Temple Beth Shalom had an ice cream truck on hand, a selfie stand, and lots of lollipops. Organizers there said on social media that they'd vaccinated 600 people.

Other child-friendly pop-up locations are also filling up or full, like clinics at Boston's Museum of Science, Acton's Discovery Museum, and Worcester's Ecotarium.

Other clinics without the bells and whistles still have many slots available. The State's Vaxfinder website now has a search tab specifically for the 5-11 age group and shows several hundred clinics and pharmacies across the state, many with appointments available.
