MILTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – A popular outdoor reservation is helping hikers stay safe in the wake of a seasonal hunt.

Beginning Monday, the 2021 archery deer hunt will take place for 11 days at Blue Hills Reservation in Milton. The hunt will take place on Mondays through Thursdays from November 15 to December 2.

While the reservation said it will not be restricting access anywhere as a response, hikers are being advised to stay safe by sticking to certain areas.

“There’s certain places you can avoid,” said food and travel writer Mark Hurwitz, who frequently leads hikes. These include parts of Ponkapoag Pond, Little Blue Hill, Palm Meadow “and then most of the eastern Blue Hills by the Shea Rink in Quincy.”

Hurwitz also said it is best for hikers to wear orange because the color is easily recognizable in the woods.

In a Facebook post, Friends of the Blue Hills said the hunt will occur from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. No hunting will be allowed on Thanksgiving Day.
