BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Senator and 2020 presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren is calling for retail giant Walmart to cease selling guns in the wake of last weekend's mass shooting at one of the chain's locations in El Paso, Texas.
In a series of Tweets Friday, Warren said companies that sell firearms have a responsibility to the safety of the communities in which they operate.
"Walmart is one of the largest gun retailers in the world," Warren wrote. "The weapons they sell are killing their own customers and employees. No profit is worth those lives. Do the right thing—stop selling guns."
She likened the situation to CVS's 2014 decision to stop selling tobacco products in their stores.
A Walmart spokesperson told the Associated Press the company was “going through a thorough review of our policies” after the tragedy.
"We are a learning organization, and, as you can imagine, we will work to understand the many important issues that arise from El Paso and Southaven, as well as those that have been raised in the broader national discussion around gun violence," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement released Wednesday. "We will be thoughtful and deliberate in our responses, and we will act in a way that reflects the best values and ideals of our company, with a focus on serving the needs of our customers, associates and communities."
Walmart did announce in February 2018 that they would stop selling guns and ammo to anyone under 21. Dick's Sporting Goods made the same decision, and also said they would stop selling military-style semi-automatic rifles.
The gunman in El Paso killed 22 people.
