TAUNTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Taunton Mayor Shaunna O’Connell’s administration is looking to improve Weir Village.

Resident Sandy Thomas has proposed a waterfront district at the location in Taunton. Thomas envisions outdoor dining, shops, kayak rentals, and even floating bonfires on the Taunton River, similar to WaterFire in Providence.

Thomas has been working closely with mayor to make this vision a reality.

“We always appreciate people’s ideas,” said Mayor O’Connell. “We have a very professional and thoughtful team here in city hall that is currently exploring all of these things.”

Discussions about a waterfront district began during the COVID-19 pandemic but were reopened this year. They already opened a splash pad, a water playground for kids to play in and cool off.

The city has more plans to improve Weir Village, including building a band stand on the other side of the river. They also hope to turn the old Bacon Felt factory into apartments and retail space.
