DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — This week, a young boy from Dedham got a welcome home/birthday parade from his community he won't soon forget.
On Thursday, Gavin Brennan turned 7-years-old. That's also the day he was released from Boston Children's Hospital after he beat both cancer and COVID-19, twice.
According to WBZ NewsRadio's Kim Tunnicliffe, Gavin said if he can do it, anyone can.
Gavin was one of the first children in the nation to test positive for COVID-19 while undergoing chemotherapy. He tested positive for COVID-19 twice while at Boston Children's Hospital, and was locked down in his room for several days each time.
"Thanks to the great joint medical team at Children’s and Dana Farber, Gavin is coming home with a highly favorable prognosis for his cancer and no COVID-19 symptoms," a DPD spokesperson said.
With lights flashing and sirens blaring, local police and fire fighters held a drive-by parade, waving to Gavin and his family sitting outside their home.
Neighbors and friends also joined in the drive-by parade, holding happy birthday signs out their windows, while others lined the streets with messages of love and support for Gavin.
During the first grader's chemo treatment for lymphoma, his mom April also tested positive for COVID-19. She has since recovered.
