Massachusetts Unemployment Soars During COVID-19 Pandemic

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — There were about 150,000 unemployment claims in Massachusetts last week, according to state labor officials.

That figure, pulled from unemployment figures released by the Federal Department of Labor, is about seven times the highest number from the financial meltdown of 2008.

The claims came from the period measured from Monday, March 16 to Saturday, March 21—the first week that restaurants in the Commonwealth offered take out and delivery options only, and the days after Gov. Charlie Baker announced his stay-at-home advisory.

Massachusetts was also among the states with the largest increases in initial unemployment claims for the week ending Saturday, March 14.
