Concrete Slab Falls Onto SUV Passing Beneath Somerville I-93 Overpass

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An inspection was launched into the Interstate 93 overpass in Somerville after a piece of concrete separated from it and crashed into the windshield of an SUV on Tuesday morning.

Massachusetts State Police said in a statement to WBZ NewsRadio that the operator of a 2010 Audi Q5, a 64-year-old man from Santa Barbara, California, reported that a piece of concrete fell onto his windshield from the Route 93 overpass as he was driving on Route 28 in Somerville. Police said that the driver was not seriously injured. WBZ-TV reported that the car was towed away from Broadway.

The impact created a large hole on the driver's side of the vehicle's windshield.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said in a statement to WBZ NewsRadio that they had received a report of concrete falling from the Exit 20 overpass Tuesday morning, and immediately dispatched officials to inspect the structure. While the inspection began, there were no road closures at the time of the incident, officials said.
