BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Numerous Bostonians were puzzled on Monday night as a string of mysterious lights in the sky zoomed over the Greater Boston area. Multiple concerned residents posted on social media from Methuen to Boston proper.

Speculation ranged from more foreign spy balloons to even extraterrestrials. As it happens, the lights were just a group of Starlink satellites passing over the area. The Starlink program by SpaceX is a constellation of miniature satellites that provide internet to dozens of countries around the world.

The company says the group of satellites orbit much lower than other internet providers, which means faster speeds — and perhaps easier visibility. The sightings might get more common, as SpaceX is planning to put at least 12,000 of the machines in orbit, and possibly more.
