BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston’s 49th Pride Parade kicked off shortly around noon on Saturday. This year’s theme was “looking back, loving forward.”
The parade started in Copley Square and made its way through the Back Bay, the South End, Bay Village, Beacon Hill, ending on City Hall Plaza.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was in attendance at the parade.
"We’re an inclusive city and it’s important for us,” Walsh said. “A lot of people have fought over the years for a lot of rights and this is a celebration of that.
The parade also remembered the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots of 1969, which were a crucial historic event in the LGBTQ rights movement.
Linda DeMarco is the president of Boston Pride. She described how thrilled she was for Saturday’s event.
“Very excited. I’ve been doing this for over 20 years. And I rarely get a good day like this with the weather. And it’s an anniversary for Stonewall, it’s going to bring a lot of people out. And this is kind of like our teaching moment for next year because next year is our 50th,” DeMarco said. “I know we’re already looking forward to next year. But, today we’re going to sit back and we’re going to enjoy the work that we put together.”
