WESTWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As residents across the Commonwealth prepare for Thanksgiving, those travelling should make sure their vehicle is ready for the trip.

AAA is projecting more than 50 million people will journey 50 miles or more from home on Thanksgiving. AAA Northeast Senior Spokesman Mark Schieldrop offered some tips on how to be prepared and safe while on the road.

Even through temperatures are not expected to be below freezing on Thanksgiving, Schieldrop said to make the preparations for winter as soon as possible.

“Get that beach chair out of there and replace it with you snow brush and your snow scraper so you’re ready to go,” said Schieldrop.

Schieldrop recommended checking things, like spare tires and windshield wipers, that can wear out in the hot summer months.

“The rubber will wear out over time, baking in the sun all summer long and we’ve had a really rainy year up to this point, so those wiper blades are worn out and tired,” said Schieldrop.

Schieldrop also encouraged residents to pack the trunk with blankets, flashlights and winter clothes, just in case the car breaks down.
