BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MBTA looked for the public's opinion on a new program to cut "T" prices for low-income riders during a briefing on Monday morning.
Under the new guidelines, rates for those who qualify would be slashed by 50 percent, according to the MBTA.
"From previous research, we know that when riders with lower income are provided with reduced fares, they will take 30 percent more trips," said Assistant General Manager for Policy and Transit Planning Lynsey Heffernan. "And that they will take more trips to healthcare and social services."
Funding for the new program will come from the state's 2024 fiscal year budget.
The MBTA says it hopes for eligible riders to be able to enroll by summer 2024.
Before the new fares can take effect, the MBTA needs approval from the board of directors.
