Sumner Tunnel Weekend Closures Resume Friday Night

BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - Just as Bostonians are getting used to the Sumner Tunnel being open, the Sumner Tunnel Restoration Project is moving forward into it's next phase, bringing weekend closures starting tonight, Friday, September 15th and running through the weekend of November 10th.

Closures are planned for the following weekends; September 15th, weekend of September 22nd, weekend of September 29th, weekend of October 20th, weekend of October 27th, weekend of November 3rd, and the weekend of November 10th.

An 8th weekend closure is currently being finalized.

The tunnel is set to close around 11 p.m. on Friday night and reopen at 5 a.m. on the following Monday morning.

"These closures are the next phase of a project that began in April of 2022 and will continue work on the tunnel ceiling, roadway, walls, lighting and additional improvements which will increase safety and climate resiliency." The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said.
