SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Salem Lowe has made its return to Salem Willows, less than a year after the storied quick-eats spot shuttered for good. The restaurant officially reopened on Memorial Day Weekend.
The old favorite Chop Suey Sandwich has returned to the menu, which is a sandwich of bean sprouts, chicken and special sauce on a soft bun. The new owners, Ryan Harriman and Kathleen Rodgers, were committed to keeping much of Salem Lowe the same, even digging up the old sign.
"You ask anybody about Salem Willows, and they'll mention Salem Lowe right off the bat. It's a staple here," Harriman said.
The restaurant had been open in one form or another since 1912 under the steady hand of the Yee family, according to the Salem State University archives. Then-owner David Yee said it was time to retire last summer.
There are some new innovations, like tweaks to the recipes for homemade noodles, fried rice, and peppered steak. The partners also own Spitfire Tacos on the North Shore.
"We had a lot of great feedback, a lot of constructive criticism, and I think people are really happy that we're here," Harriman said.
