GORHAM, NH (WBZNewsRadio) - Skateboarding is now officially part of the physical education curriculum at Ed Fenn Elementary in Gorham, New Hampshire.

Students in 4th and 5th grades participated in a two-week skateboarding unit, called "Get on Board." Developed by Portsmouth Elementary PE Teacher, Sean McGrimley, and the non-profit First Push Syndicate, the program introduces a new outdoor activity while instilling confidence and helping to teach students about healthy and active lifestyles.

"As a physical educator I love how this program ties into my long-term curriculum goal, which is simply finding a lifelong fitness activity or hobby for every student. The positive feedback has been wonderful, and parents have already told me that their child wants to buy a skateboard," said PE teacher, Jessie Arsenault. "I also love how this unit's curriculum covers four out of five National Physical Education Standards and draws students out of their comfort zones. It is very impressive how safely is the utmost priority, and how the progression of skill development is very effective!"

During the two weeks, students learned about the equipment and safety gear, proper skatepark etiquette, how to push the skateboard and apply proper foot orientation, how to turn and move while riding.
