North Shore Artist Taps Into Ancient Craft

MARBLEHEAD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The loom has been around for centuries, even millennia, and Kari Breed has been perfecting the craft for twenty years, a process that she says is "extremely therapeutic."

"When I tell them that I'm a weaver, people like to joke, 'Oh, colonial times,'" Kari told WBZ NewsRadio's Brooke McCarthy, and showing how to weave with her floor loom.

"The 'warp' is the length of the fabric you're weaving — and the 'weft' is the yarn that you're weaving across the loom."

Kari has brought the ancient process into the 21st century, weaving scarves, placemats, and bookmarks through her business 'Woven By K.' Each piece is handcrafted in her home office in Marblehead and up for sale on Instagram.
