LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new public art project in Lynn focuses on the children of the city as they cope with the challenges of the pandemic.
The project, titled "Truth Be Told," features several murals across Lynn developed by the nonprofit group Beyond Walls. According to their website, they are "a non-profit place-making agency that uses a creative lens to address community needs," through local projects and programs.
“This October, we welcome a series of public art installations to Lynn, Massachusetts to explore the idiosyncrasies of the times, to hold up a mirror to the uncertainty of it all," the website read.
One mural is painted on the side of a building in the downtown area on 170 Union St. The installation depicts a boy practicing the violin, while two birds fly away from a shattered vase.
Julia Midland of Beyond Walls said the artist who created the mural wanted to channel the idea of overcoming challenges during the pandemic.
"He really wanted to portray that, that you know, even out of bleak times can come really positive beautiful things," Midland said. "And when you look at this boy you can see that, with these birds breaking free out of the vase."
Another mural located on the Community Health Center in Lynn features a set of enlarged photographs of local young people.
According to the Beyond Walls Instagram account, the nonprofit worked with youth at local YMCA branches, the Boys and Girls Club of Lynn, Girls Inc. of Lynn and Greater Lynn Family and Children's Services to capture the photos.
“I think a lot of the feedback that we heard from the kids from the different community partners we worked with was that this is an incredibly challenging time," Midland said. "But really the importance of hope and perseverance."
