Worker Helping Set Up Boston New Year's Eve Festivities Dies

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio/AP) — A worker has died following a fatal construction accident during preparations for First Night Boston on Saturday.

The incident happened in Copley Square around 10 a.m. when a 3,500 pound lighting ballast came loose from a forklift and fell on the worker.

The worker has been identified as a man in his late 20s. His name has yet to be released.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews.

A spokesman for Conventures Inc., the events company that runs the annual celebration, said in a statement that “we are deeply saddened.”

The death is under investigation by police, the Suffolk district attorney’s office, and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

First Night Boston is the city’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration.
