BOSTON (WBZ-AM) — Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — about to be sworn in as a U.S. Senator from Utah — spoke to CNN about the column he wrote for Wednesday’s Washington Post. In the column, Romney strongly criticized President Donald Trump.

"[Trump's] conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions last month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office," Romney wrote in the column.

Sitting down with CNN Wednesday afternoon, Romney was asked why he is coming out publicly with this kind of criticism now.

“The departure of [Defense Secretary Jim Mattis], and the decision to pull out of Syria — and the abrupt way that it was done — was a precipitating event for my finally going on this record,” Romney said.

Romney ran for president in 2012, losing to former President Barack Obama. He told CNN he would not be running for president in 2020.
