BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Friday is National Bike to Work Day! A day when people are encouraged to ditch their cars for their morning commute and hop on a bike instead. In Boston, the city marks the occasion by hosting an annual bike ride to City Hall.

WBZ NewsRadio caught up with a group of riders who were making the nine-mile journey from West Roxbury into the city.

“Ultimately, safety is the key, and we’re working towards it as a community to make sure that everyone feels safe on the roads,” said Michael Zulch, who was leading the group on the ride.

The group outing started small, with only about eight riders, but is expected to grow along the planned ride route, as there are many designated start points around the city.

"I'm retired, so I don't need to bike everyday to work but I often bike for exercise and to see the city," said Gary from West Roxbury.

“[Today] is perfect weather to get people who are a little unsure [about riding] to get [them] out on their bikes,” said a participant.

Once riders reach City Hall, there will be free breakfast and coffee to greet riders to celebrate a job well done.

"I think it's great, any way to encourage people to bike vs. driving to work [is good]," said Steve, another participant.

The City of Boston said in a statement that “it’s important to celebrate everyone who rides to Boston – whether it’s for work or fun.”
