MILTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- It's a busy time for Milton Town Treasurer James McAuliffe.
He among city and town treasurers around the Commonwealth are very busy right before the Christmas holiday.
And, no they're not doing last minute shopping.
They're taking questions from residents about paying their property taxes early, because of the new tax laws passed by Congress.
"Oh we've had a rush of people coming in today to pay the bills off," he said"
People have been paying their property taxes for the first half of next year early, to take advantage of the current property tax deduction, which will be capped next year.
McCauliffe says the phones in his offices has been ringing off the hook too.
"We've been getting calls every five minutes or so," he said.
Will pre-paying your property taxes actually save you money? Well, that depends, according to tax attorney Jay Darby at Sullivan and Worcester in Boston.
He says the new tax bill is a thousand pages long and he doubts if anybody has read it all the way through.
"Whether it's a good idea or not, it all depends on the persons individual situation. It requires talking to your own professional adviser, tax preparer or tax accountant," Darby said.
